NOW EVEN GREENER - HEATED ENTIRELY BY WOOD!

This converted barn is over 200 years old and has had many uses over the years - but as soon as we saw it we knew it would make a beautiful cozy holiday cottage. Built from traditional red brick and with it's stunning beams and cute barn door we're sure you'll agree this gorgeous cottage makes an ideal holiday retreat. Badger Cottage is situated adjacent to Alde Garden - which is perfect for access to Aldeburgh, Southwold & Framlingham, as well as Minsmere RSPB reserve and lots of other lovely treats that this stunning part of Suffolk has to offer. It has two galleried bedrooms which can be completely shut off from one another - making it perfect for a small family or two couples to share. The woodburner makes it the ideal choice for a cozy winter break, providing the main source of heat - although each room is fitted with an electric heater to warm the cottage when the woodburner is not lit.

Badger Cottage exterior

It has a country farmhouse style kitchen and eating area, as well as a spacious bathroom with a beautiful original Victorian roll-top bath and shower over. The double doors give access to a small private courtyard surrounded by woven hazel fencing, with a table and chairs for sitting or eating outside. A small area just inside the doors allows you to store and dry muddy or wet boots and coats - making it the perfect base for exploring the many wonderful footpaths and guided walks in the area. At night, snuggle up in the sumptuous beds up in the loft - the double bedroom has a beautiful double bed with an extra deep mattress and feather quilt. The second bedroom has twin pine beds with very comfortable mattresses and an extra sofabed tucked away in a hideyhole for a third child or extra guest.

Whether you're looking for a base for a walking or cycling holiday, or a cozy cottage for a romantic retreat or small family to enjoy - Badger Cottage is the ideal choice.

Badger Cottage has been lovingly restored by Marie & Mark (with a little help from their friends!) to create a low-impact holiday cottage. Renovations were done using environmentally friendly paints and other natural building materials such as lime, and re-using reclaimed materials as far as possible. Most of the furniture and fittings are either recycled, hand-made from reclaimed materials or sourced locally. Solar panels heat the water for the bath, and all lights have low energy light bulbs - and a lovely big water butt takes rain from the roof to water the plants. If you would like to read more about Alde Garden's eco credentials please see our green policy.

Badger Cottage's Eco Message..

It was our aim for the cottage to promote recycling as a way of life - not just a way of disposing of waste - and to introduce the idea that reclaim doesn't always mean a compromise on quality. Hence:

  • the lovely bed in the master bedroom has been handmade from reclaimed wood, as have the bedside tables;

  • refurbishments were also done using reclaimed materials as far as possible - the kitchen was from a classified ad and the quarry tiles and Victorian bath were from Freegle;

  • the balustrade in the guest bedroom was handmade from reclaimed wood (some Vietnamese teak which had been used for transportation and was destined for the bonfire);

  • nearly all the paint in the cottage is eco paint bought from Earth & Reed - an eco building materials shop in West Suffolk;

  • the woodburner and solar panels provide renewable alternatives to 'traditional' heating methods. Electricity is also from a renewable source - being the 100% renewable energy tariff from Ecotricity.
