the cob roundhouse

Building with cob (also known as 'clay lump') is a very traditional and extremely eco-friendly method of creating living space - and we can't wait to get our hands dirty for this project! Virtually carbon neutral - we hope to source all (or nearly all) of our materials either on site from the ground (mud, clay, sand & straw are the basic ingredients of cob) or from reclaim (used bricks, windows, doors, hardcore). Once finished, this circular cob house will provide a cozy holiday home suitable for a couple, small family or small group of friends.

The thick cob walls will give a soft warm feel and the building will be positioned and designed for maximum passive solar heating during colder times as well as cooling insulation from the sun during hotter months. It will have a living roof, providing not only insulation but also extra wildlife habitat and of course a very attractive natural looking roof. Like the other units onsite this will provide all the comforts - beds, seating, woodburner, cooking facilities etc - only this one will sleep up to 6 people. Once this project is nearing completion we'll update this page with more information - so watch this space! If you would like to get involved with building this amazing structure there may be the opportunity to do so - email us at info@aldegarden.co.uk for more information.
